Liverpool Harriers & Athletic Club

Welcome

Liverpool Harriers & Athletic Club was established in 1882 and has been a successful club for many years establishing itself as one of the elite athletic clubs in the UK. The club operates all year round and caters for young athletes from the age of +9yrs.

It participates in all the main national track and field athletic leagues as well as regional competition. The club also competes in many road running and cross country events.

Liverpool Harriers & Athletic Club is located at Wavertree Athletic Stadium, Wellington Road, L15 4LE.

What 's new?....

Liverpool Harriers & Athletic Club's season continues with the various Cross Country leagues and championships in the new year with some athletes also preparing for the indoor season. Please use fixtures for the results.

16.05.13 (11.45pm)

A number of our middle distance athletes and throwers went to Trafford on Tuesday 14th May and many had Pb's. Results.

Its nice to hear of the selection of the following club members for Regional and International Events, the first being Rachael Burns - selected for the GB Squad for the World Aquathlon Championships in London (Hyde Pk) in September. John McCole and Maria Barrett both selected to run for the North at the Great Manchester 10K. Well done to all.

In addition Erin McBride competed in Italy last week, report to follow.

A number of Harriers athletes attended the annual BUCS Track and Field Championships in Bedford over the weekend, although I believe none were placed in the top three many good performances were had. Please see the 3 days Results

The start of the youngsters U13 /U15 National League matches started yesterday at SportCity, they finished a credible 2nd behined Sale Harriers having a few gaps in the team. Many Pb's were had Well done to all and also the Team Managers/coaches and Parents who supported- Results

In addition the Northern League Team performed well to win the first match by 22 points from the Wirrral AC at Ashton under Lyne today. See results.

I am informed that Ben Russell came 4th in the BUCS at Bedford today in the 10K with both Jamie Webb and Rebecca Linney both making the 800m finals tomorrow. Well done to all

Liverpool Harriers & Athletic Club's season in the UK Youth Development League started with a home match at Wavertree in the Premier 1 Division. There were 6 teams in the match which included U20 and U17 Men and Women. It was a windy start initially followed by a downpour. On the day in the difficult conditions there were some decent results for us. We finished 4th overall with some gaps that need to be filled for the next match. Results

During the weekend whilst many went to run the Marathon in London on Sunday two of our young athletes had been chosen to run in the Mini Marathon. Emily finished 2nd and lucy finished 14th. Well done girls. Results

In the senior race the following finished the course - Carl Mountain (369th - 3hrs.00.31secs), Vicky Unsworth (1993rd - 3hrs. 07mins 58secs), Mark Helme (Matt) - (3745th - 3hrs:23mins:52secs), Robbie Collins (4655th - 3hrs:29mins:40secs) and Gordon Brown (Vet 70+ - 12342nd - 4hrs:06mins:57 secs). A good turnout was had at the Ernie Gallgher YA Medal Meeting at Wavertree in the morning- Full results

However the weather turned and during a wet and windy afternoon the T J O'Mahoney Memorial meeting took place - Results

Whilst we were all at Wavertree the Senior Wmen and Women were battling it out at the National Road Relays at Sutton Park, Birmingham. The women finished runners up in the Northern Championship (7th in the National) which was run in the race and the men finished 5th (25th National) . Men's NA results and ERRA Results. The National YA Road Relays were postpomned in October and re aranged to this weekend. Howveer the numbers were down and none of our girls entered any teams.The U17 Men travelled to Sutton Park with 5 lads. The A team of Abdi Sharif, Callum Grant and Daniel Jarvis on the day were runners up, with an incomplete team of Chris Manning and Lee Dobson. The U15 boys (two were under age) finished 21st with Elliott Colman the 1st leg in the 'B' team. Results - U17 Men / U15 Boys.

Tonight there was an excellent win by Richie Burney at the Chester Spring 5 race in a time of 25.40. I am also told that Robbie Collins also finished in a time of 27.49. Full results when available.

A number of our athletes competed in various events over the weekend. Sarah Jarvis ran a great pb at the Salford 10K on Good Friday in a time of 37.16 where she finished in 89th place. -

The following day Maria Barrett smashed the ladies course record on the Princess Park 5k run in 17.37, to take over a minute off the course record whilst I am told by Tony Clarke that James Riley won the event in 15.45 but the results credit him as unknown!!! Did he fail to register?? Others who did well were Kristian Quirk - 2nd (17.32), Maria Barrett - 4th (17.37), Carl Mountain - 6th (18.01), Rachael Burns - 7th (18.08), Rebecca Donohue - 10th (18.51), Andrew Grant - 22nd (20.22) and Mathew Stevens - 98th (25.26)

Meanwhile John McCole won the Runcorn Bridge race (5mile ) in a time of 25.47 and was supported in winning the team prize with Alan Ashton - 4th (27.28) and Peter Brame - 11th (28.32). At the English Schools XC Championships in South Derbyshire yesterday (16/03/13) the club was well represented in most age groups, but success on the day went to Matty Shirling who has come back to form at the right time in winning the Senior Boys race - Results

It's been another busy weekend for many of our athletes with the Inter Counties at a muddy Cofton Park in Bromsgrove. Matty Shirling came back to form by being runner up in the U17M race and Richie Burney again ran a good race to finished 28th closely followed by Dave Mountford (31st) in the high class senioor men's race. This morning a number of our athletes went to Trafford for the 10K road race. Ben Russell was 18th in 31.24 followed by James Riley (28th - 32.06), Ian Lawton (41st - 32.48), Alan Ashton (58th - 33.37), Lewis Robson (88th - 34.58), Sion Wynne - Williams (93 - 35.07), with Maria Barrett being 6th female to finish (94th -35.08) and Robbie Collins ( 95th - 35.10) , Carl Mountain (129th - 36.06), Gareth Howell ( 141st - 36.37), Sophie Whiteside (144th - 36.41) and James Cassidy (146th - 36.50), Vicky Unsworth (306th - 42.43), Tony Green(406th - 46.17), Graham Howell (443rd - 48.00) - Full Results

It was another busy weekend for the club and its athletes with 3 major events -

1: BUCS Indoors at Sheffield,

2: National XC Championships at Sunderland.

3: NI at Birmingham.

One wonders why the powers to be allow three such major events to clash?

At the BUCS event at Sheffield Jamie Webb made the final of the 800m and finished 5th. It took a while to find the results. Eventually after trawling through a link was found on their calender - RESULTS

The U13 Girls finished well in 9th place, with the U13 Boys having an incomplete team although Max Brame (48) and Josh Lowe(161) ran well whilst under age. The U15 Girls also failed to complete a team but the U15 Boys finished well in 10th place with 2 out of the 4 counters were under age. The Under 17Men just missed out on a medal finishing 4th. The U20 Women finished a credible 6th place, whilst the U20 Men's team weee incomplete due to other events going on. The Senior Men failed to have a complete team but were led home by Richie Burney (29th). Dissapointingly no Senior Women made the journey even though numerous had been entered. National XC Results

At the England Athletics Age Group Championships at the NIA in Birmingham Alex Boyce was runner up in the U20 - 400m (47.56sec) to the winner in 47.55sec. A close finish. Aylish Mackenzie was equal 2nd in the U17 Ladies HJ (1.70m). RESULTS

Just over a week ago at the annual Merseyside Athletic Network planning meeting in Liverpool City Centre, the club were awarded their England Athletics Club Mark award. Its the second time that the club have achieved it. Arwel Williams and Mike Doliong who did all the hard work were there to receive it.

Last weekend (16th Feb) was a busy one on the International side of things with three Harriers competing at the Grand Prix at the NIA in Birmingham, being Katarina Johnson - Thompson, Jonny Mellor and Anyika Onoura. It was nice to see Craig Gunderson in his new role with UKA doing some post race interviews. Full meeting results are on the UKA website.

There were also quite a few Harriers also spectating at the event.

In addition to the above your Club Secretary Taff Williams was the Field Referee at the event ably assisted as one of the field officials by Dean Williams (no relation) (Referee at the London Olympic and Paralympic Games).

Others went during the weekend to the Parbold Hill Race (16th February) - with Richie Burney finishing second in a sprint finish, Alan Ashton (6th, Glen Groves (7th), Paul Harrison (46th), Eddie Devlin (104), Coach Clarke (105), Peter Simpson (247), Karen Dalby (325) and Pat Henley (404). Craig Gundersen (Media Officer - UKA) kindly gave me the link for this weekend's trials at Sheffield.

In the 400m - Alex Boyce ran a 47.85 (pb), Harry Harper and Matt Jackson ran in the heats of the 1500m but failed to qualify. Jonny Mellor who was recovering from a cold ran the 3k and finished 5th (8.08.20) and Rebbeca Linney was 3rd in her heat (2.09.55).

I though last weekkend was a busy one but hey - what about this one:

1. L & D XC Champs - 1st team and Richie Burney runner up followed by John McCole and Laurie Luscome respectively with Ian Lawton (7th), Ash Chambers (9), Robbie Collins (12). Well done to everyone that turned out on a dismal wet morning at Clarkes Gardens.

2. The U11 Girls won the Manchester and Districs XC League team award and the U13 and U15 Girls won the bronze team awards. Also congrats to Olivia Perez who won the U20 runner up award for the season and the the club won the U20 team award after only turning up at the St Helens race. In addition the BUCS XC Championships were held at Leeds. We had a number of athletes in the event being Ben Russell (24th in A race)Ash Chambers also ran but was missed off the results- Results

Today a number of athletes went to compete in the Alsager 5 - Dave Mountford (17th), Ricky Challinor (26th) Maria Barrett (67th) but 6th female to finish in a big field and Eddy Devlin (139).

Northern XC Championships 2013 - Knowsley Safari Park

On a snowy Saturday morning the NA XC Championships took place on the fields adjoining Knowsley Safari Park but on Lord Derby's estate. The first the event was the U17 Women and although we had one athlete entered she gave up on the weather. Hopefully this age group issue will be resolved next year onwards.

The Junior Women ran with a number under age and took the runners up spot in the team event - Katherine Walker was the first counter in 9th place followed by Rebecca Donohue in 15th and Olivia Perez in 17th place. Well done ladies.

The Under 13 Girls had a good squad out but just finished outside the medals in 5th place. The team was Bethan Strange (5th), Lucy Miller (8th), Emily Gray (28th), and Jesicca Cook (88th). The rmainder finished as follows Amelia Williamson (89th), Grace Preston (92nd), Maddy Broad (101) Emily Lucas (107), and Jasmine Gorman (122).

Thge U17 Men who won the team award last year had to be content with 4th place with Daniel Jarvis (5th), Abdi Sharif (38th), Kristian Quirk (43rd) and Lee Dobson (49th). Others placed were Callum Grant (68th) and Chris Manning (93rd).

Thge U13 boys had a full team but finished in in 13th place, the majority of the boys were a year underage theregore they did well under the conditions. The team was Max Brame (55th), Andrew Grant(66th), Daniel Preston (82nd) and Josh Lowe(106).

The Under 15 Girls finished 10th place with the counters being Sophia Brennan (7th), Abbie Gray(59th), Melanie Cattell (76th) and Isobel Haygarth(81st). In addition Emily Rowe (95th) with Lucy Cattell (99th).

The Under 15 Boys with majority being under age finished in 7th place with 50% of the team being placed Tom Clarke(50th), Ryan Doubtfire(52nd), Elliott Colman(70), Tom Rogerson(75th), Christian Woods(80th), Sean Keyes (114th), Ben Campbell (123rd) and Tom Smith (125th).

Although 5 members had been entered in the Junior Men's race only 3 finished being Jamie Webb (37th), Ashley Chambers (56th), Nzimah Akpan (64th).

The Senior Women did well to finish in 6th place, with the counters being Laura Quine (23rd), Liz Egan (30th) who flew over from Ireland and had a terrrible journey, Seonaid Murray (35th), and Sophie Whiteside (47th). Others who also finished well were Sarah Jackson (94th), Vicky Unsworth (133rd), Karen Dalby (177th).

The Seniuor Men's team finished in 8th place with Richard Burney (26th), Ben Russell (36th), Adam Peers (96th), Laurie Luscombe (110th), Alan Ashton (140th) and Ian Lawton (146th). Others who finished were Robbie Collins (153rd), Lee Midghall (155th), Glen Groves (188th), Peter Belcher (237th), James Cassidy (248th), and Sion Wynne Williams (275th).

I appreciate it was tough for all but those who competed and finished well done. I spoke to Bud Buldaro one of the country's top distance coaches who loved the venue and course. Coming from him its a good reference.

Harriers Athletes win medals over 2 days at the Northern Indoor Championships at Sheffield.

Yesterday Day (1) - Anna Rowe ended up with a Gold in the U15G LJ (5.05m) and two Silvers 60mH (9.80) and SP (9.41m). Jack Meredith won the Snr Men's 60mH (7.96) and Rachel Thomas was third in the Snr Womens PV (3.40m)

On Day 2 - Mike Hartley won the U20M HJ (1.90) with Alex Rafferty taking 2nd place (1.85m) but Aylish Mackenzie also won the U17 Ladies HJ (1.65m) whilst Sam Meredith was 2nd in the U17Men TJ (12.42m). Craig Jones was 3rd in the Snr Men's LJ (7.05m). A number of other athletes travelled over to the event but were unplaced. Well done to all.

Katherine Walker ran for the North of England at the McCain Cross Challenge in Antrim and finished 21st in the Senior Women's race even though she is a first year Under 20. Matty Shirling had his England call up in the IAAF Junior Men's race and finished 13th overall) but 10th in his race. Also Adrian Webb took some U17 Men over to the same event and they finished Dan Jarvis (15th), Abdi Sharif (17th) and Lee Dobson (30th). Well Done to all.

 

A number of our athletes especially the U11 G travelled to the Manchester XC League and Katie Miller and Ella McNiven were placed 1st and 2nd respectively in their race.

At the 12th Merseyside Sporting Champions Dinner recently held at Liverpool’s Adelphi Hotel was the prestigious annual occasion organised by the Merseyside Sports Partnership.

The award for Lifetime Achiever was shared between Liverpool’s Alan Lynch and Knowsley’s Mike Dooling. Mike has contributed to athletics in Knowsley for more than four decades as an official, coach, volunteer and teacher.

He also is the development officer and committee member at Liverpool Harriers AC. Welll done

Mixed days results at National XC Relays on Sat 3rd November at Mansfield on a dry but chilly day. The U17 Men continued to excel with runners up place on the day. Matt Shirling cut down the gap to just over 7 seconds from the winners. The U13girls ran well to finish 9th out of 89 complete teams and the U15girls 15th out of 96 teams. The U15boys were 35th and 52 respectively out of 81 teams. Two of the lads in the A team were running under age and were last year part of the winning Northern Rd and XC team. It was nice to see a Junior Women's team who finished 12th out of 26. The Junior men's team were 40th out of 58. Senior Womens teams were entered but DNA on the day? In the Senior Men's team Matt Jackson had a chip issue and poor Harry Harper is shown as doing a lap of over 36 mins. The time would have finished the team in 24th place out of 157

Harriers Athletes star at the Amsterdam 1/2 Marathon and 8K race -

Maria Barrett won the ladies race in 1hr 19min 48secs and was followed in by Sarah Jarvis with a time of 1hr 25mins 52 sec. Alan Ashton finished in 26th place with a time of 1hr 16mins and 32secs followed by Eddie Devlin in 1hr 26.18mins.

Below are the images of a recently published book about the life of ' Benjamin Howard Baker'. His achievements in sport were amazing. He was an Olympic Hugh Jumper, England Goalkeeper, Cricketer, Swimmer and Diver, Tennis and water Polo Player. But most of all he was a ' Liverpool Harrier'

Wirral 10K / Liverpool Marathon

Three of Tony Clarke's athletes took the podium places in the woman's race at the Wirral 10k on Sunday, first home was Rachael Burns in a massive PB of 37:33 90 seconds faster than her old PB. In second place was Sophie Hunt in 37:46. Third was Sarah Jarvis who also smashed her previous PB by a massive 3 minutes and 20 seconds to run a brilliant 38:38 clocking.

The men of the club didn't let us down either with Carl Mountain 4th in a time of 36.19, Peter Brame was 5th in 36.32 and Gareth Howell 6th in 36.45.

In the Liverpool Marathon Richie Burney came an excellent 4th in a time of 2hrs 35.24.

Also on the 30th September at the Swinton 10Mile Road race Maria Barret finished 2nd lady in a very impressive 60:17 on whats described by many runners in the North-West as the toughest 10 mile race around. Well done Maria and good luck to her on this weekends Amsterdam Half-Marathon.
