Liverpool Harriers & AC - Xmas Handicap - 2000

Andy Thomas won the Club Xmas Handicap on a dry, but cold Sunday afternoon (17.12.00). Ali O'Connor had the fastest lap.  The field only consisted of 12 male athletes (over 15 yrs old). A number had run in the Hale 5, the same morning.

However the ladies did not let us down and had a combined all field of 34 athlete's, which was won by Melissa Ronan. The fastest female was Joanne Colleran.

The lads (14 and under) had 18 in the field and the race was won by Laurie Luscombe with David Marteau running the fastest leg.

Death of  Dick Georgeson

Earlier this week sad news was received from Bill McEvoy, that Dick Georgeson had passed away in hospital at the age of 93yrs on 16th November 2000, after being in Broadgreen Hospital for some 7 weeks. For this time his devoted wife Ethel spent 5 to 7 hours a day with him

Dick was one of the pre-war secretaries who kept Liverpool Harriers going through hard times and helped lay the seeds of such a healthy athletics club.

Everyone's thought's are with Ethel and the family at this time.

                            Mike Awarded

On Saturday 14th October 2000, at the North of England AAA AGM, Mike Dooling, (a Vet of this parish), was one of three to be presented with the NOEAAA President's Award for the year 2000.

The citation in Athletics Weekly (18.10.00) states: " Mike Dooling's nomination comes from Development, but it could equally have arrived from Track & Field, Cross Country or Road Running.  He has undertaken many roles at club, county, regional and national levels including: secretary to North West Coaching Committee, Athlete Services Manager/Performance Squad Co-ordinator, ACNW ; Secretary - North West Forum; Administrator - ESAA Palfreyman Trust; ESAA committee member and team manager; NOEAA selector and team manager; track referee and event manager; championship organiser.

At the heart of all of Mike's involvement is his desire to ensure that opportunities exist for everyone to take part in athletics and to achieve their true potential.

Like many other you wonder hoe he finds time to fulfill all his duties, teach full time and have time for his family. We really ought to thank Eryl for letting him spend so much time working for athletics".

Well Done Mike

Liverpool Shines in Shanghai Sister City Athletics Invitational Tournament, Shanghai 25th June 2000

In temperatures in excess of 35o C, extremely high humidity and breezy conditions, a group of eight athletes from Liverpool Harriers represented Liverpool City in an augural Sister City competition against teams from Hamburg, Dunedin (New Zealand) Vladivostok, Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Helen Roscoe (u23) achieved a fine double in winning the 100m and 200m, equalling her legal personal best of 11.90s against a wind of -1.62m/s and she battled against a stiff cross wind around the bend to run clear of the field in the 200m in 24.49s.

In the 5000m Tony O’Brien steadily broke the field to win in a respectable winning time of 15.26.63s. Other personal bests were achieved by Danielle Halsall (u20) in the 400m in 56.75s, and Gayle O’Connor (u23) in the high jump at 1.75m. Gayle was unlucky to twist her ankle in a jump off for first place with Jiang Haiyan from Shanghai.

Other Liverpool performances were from David O’Leary 2nd 400m hurdles and 5th place in the 100m, Danny Graham 3rd place high jump, Jennifer Kemp 3rd in the javelin and Ian Lowthian 4th place 400m.

Other notable performances were achieved by Shanghai athletes Wang Zhouzhou (Shanghai) who attempted and narrowly missed an Olympic qualifying high jump mark of 2.28m, Zhong Fengzhu in the shot put at 18.26m, and Hamburg athletes Virike Ahlborn (u23) 400m in 53.62s and Ingo Schulz 400m in 46.40s. All times were electronic and the competition was staged under IAAF rules and regulations.

Danny Graham has been selected to compete for Great Britain in the USA v GB match at Scotstoun Stadium, Glasgow on Sunday July 2nd.

Head of delegation, Dick Johnson from Liverpool Leisure Services, announced the four-day tour, which also included sight seeing, a welcome party and a visit to an acrobatic show as a resounding success in developing links between the Sister Cities. Liverpool Leisure Services, Liverpool Harriers and Virgin Atlantic Airlines sponsored this venture.

More on the China Trip - On the trip to a local Shanghai market Taff decided to haggle for a boxed Chinese tea set, which was seen on the bus by the rest of the team and were amused as to how he was going to carry it home. Well he did and still in one piece he presented it to his wife who was delighted with the gift.

It was nearly as bad as the tackiest ‘diamond studded gold’ Rolex watch which Danny Graham haggled for. An informant states that it’s now stopped.

Dick Johnson (Leisure Services) has a new nickname for Taff – RIP (Van Winckle), because he never saw somebody sleep so much. Must be old age catching up with him, or catching on sleep after listening to Dick’s snoring all night.

In order to celebrate their success the girls went to bed at 03.00am on the Monday morning, whilst the lads decided that they would finish at 06.00am. The only problem was they missed the Monday morning sightseeing tour to the Shanghai riverfront.

It was a trip of a lifetime for all and worth the 12 hour non stop flight from London Heathrow, although I will never forget eating rice soup, boiled rice, rice with egg and noodles for breakfast.

I almost forgot, although Jenny sang like a lark, never ever give Danny a mike and keep him away from a karaoke machine.

Can I thank Dick Johnson, Margaret Cheetham, Janet Roscoe (who also assisted in producing the initial part of this report) and all the athletes for their company during the trip. As per the report the athletes were ambassadors for the City, and there is a rumour that we have been invited to foreign lands next year. Watch this space!

Postscript: Helen Roscoe (200m), Jenny Kemp ( javelin), and Danny Graham (High Jump) have been selected to compete for Great Britain and Northern Ireland in an under 23 Championships International match against France and Germany which is to be held at Wavertree Athletics Centre on Saturday 22nd July.

Taff Williams.

                     WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

Recently an e-mail was received from an ex- Harrier (member 1952- 1956), by the name of Barbara Fielding (nee Gordon) all the way from America (Nevada). She had visited this web site, and wished to be put back in touch with past members. On speaking to Ernie, Tom O'Mahoney and Harold Benson she was remembered as a good hurdler. I have since had a further e-mail, with her address and will pass on. The other members she recalls were Ron Davis, Brian Riley, Ellis Barnard, Don Hobson, Henry Crockett, Tommy Mylett, Dorothy O'Donnell, Wyn Gaffney, and latterly Nancy Abrams (now deceased).  If you have a computer you can mail her on Bldgcode@earthlink.net. (NOTE : change of e-mail address).

Do other past members visit the site? If so let us know.
