The ECCA National Cross Country Relays

at Berry Hill Park, Mansfield

on Saturday 9th November 2002

On a pleasant autumn day the boys travelled to Mansfield for the annual pilgrimage to the X.C. relays. We hoped that we would come away with at least a medal and the under 13 boys - 'A' team consisting of Paul ' I don't have to train' Cummins, Harry Harper and Laurie Luscombe ended up with the runners up medals. However there was a good team effort from the 'B' team of John Ashton, James Toohey and Dominic Bridge who finished a credible 17th place.

National Young Athlete's League

Premier Division - Rotherham

Sunday 30th June 2002

Having been to Rotherham some 6years ago when it rained all day, I was apprehensive about a return visit with the forecast for the day being cloudy with rain forecast. On the day it stayed dry until 4pm and we had some heavy showers. It did not deter the performance of the lads who won ( 279pts, from Wirral in 2nd place (191pts), LPS in 3rd place (172pts), and with Hallamshire in 4th place (85pts). It was a good team performance which meant the boys are still top of the premier division with the last match at Middlesbrough in three weeks time (21st July 2002).

National Young Athlete's League

Premier Division - Wavertree

Sunday 2nd June 2002

On an initial sunny day which turned into a muggy wet one, the boys who were neck and neck with the boys from Manchester, pulled away after halfway and won convincingly by 38 points. This was due to a good team effort, due to injury, and lads away on holidays. Lol Dobie deputised for me as team manager, due to a family commitment. It would be unfair to highlight any particular individual as I said it was a sound team performance. We are now TOP of the Premier Division. Well Done to all.

However, they were still placed second with 145pts, behind Blackpool who won with 256pts, with Skyrac in third with 112pts. Sale Harriers were unable to send a team.

North of England X.C. Championships.

Derby - Saturday 26th January 2001

On a wet and miserable day, a coach of lads, girls and parents left Wavertree at 8am for one of the main cross country races of the year. Hopes were high and the lads and girls didn't let us down. It was one of the hardest courses that I have seen in my time, and in some places I would say dangerous. I'm glad I was not the meeting referee.

Under 13 Boys The boys wanted to emulate the U13 girls who won their team event, however they had to settle for 2nd place behind Shildon. At least half of the team were under age and will be back next year. The only individual medal was silver for a strong run by little Craig Gunderson. he was supported by Liam McCully (21st),  Laurie Luscombe ( 28th) and Harry Harper (46th). The others who finished were John Ashton (52nd) and Pail Cummings (71st).

Under 15 Boys  -The boys were the holders of the trophy and most had won it last year whilst under age, however things were going to be hard on the day with Tom Michaelson out and under doctor's order's and John Mannion with an injured foot. On the day Joe Jacklin fell ill with a tummy bug and after travelling, was sick twice.  The individual medal was won by Paul McHugh with a fighting run into 2nd place. The team were third overall (129pts) behined Sale (126pts) and the winners Trafford (72pts). Our team consisted of Danny Malone (29th), David Marteau (30th), and Mike Quarless (67th). Others who finished were Terry Brady (80th), David Catt (82nd), Andrew Moorcroft (89th), Paul Marshall (124th), and Craig Hoy 132nd).

Under 17 Men - With only eight athlete's entered, at least six turned up to run and four finished. The team finished in 6th place with 217pts, and congratulations to the lads from LPS who won. Our team consisted of Ryan Armstrong (23rd), Stuart Morland (28th), Joe Michaelson (79th0, and Kenny Rainey (87th).

Sunday 6th January 2002

The YA boys and girls had to wait for the senior races to finish before they could have their say. As usual the youngsters performed well on a hard course.
