Liverpool Harriers & AC competes in 5 Track & Field Leagues, covering a variety of ages for both sexes.
It is a measure of the Club's overall strength that we can turn out so many athletes at such a level.
Perhaps even more impressive is that we can provide top class Team Managers to organise the teams, plus a large number of timekeepers, Field Judges, etc. to ensure the success of those fixtures which we host at Wavertree.

British Athletics Leaguenational league for Senior Men (U20s, and exceptionally U17s, may compete as Seniors).
We have participated in this league every year since 1970.  The team is currently called "City of Liverpool", to gain sponsorship, and athletes wear a blue vest with a liver bird logo.  Not all our team are first Claim Members: the rules of the BAL now allow up to 5 "Higher Performance Members" to be included in our team for any fixture - these are athletes from other less successful clubs who join Liverpool Harriers as Second Claim, purely for the level of competition which is available.
There are 5 levels within the league structure.  In 2011, we gained promotion to the Premier League - the top level - i.e. we are among the best 8 clubs in the UK).
Brian Jones and Len Steers are the Team Managers.

UK Women's League - a national league for Senior Women. (U20s may compete as Seniors).
As for the BAL above, we compete as "City of Liverpool"; our team can include up to 4 "Higher Performance Members".
There are 4 levels to the structure: "Premier Division" and Divisions 1, 2, 3.  After a traumatic 2010, when our team was thrown out of the League over a technicality and had to gain re-admittance via the Quailification Round, a solid performance in 2011 resulted in 4th place in Division 3.
and  and 4 foreign athletes to compete in any given fixture. Each athlete is restricted to a maximum of 3 events, plus relays, at a meeting, but LHAC is currently seeking to change this rule.
Harold Benson and Margaret Cheetham are our Team Managers, assisted by Sarah Jackson and Kristine Reinhold (when they are not actually running or jumping!).

North of England Track & Field League - confined to North of England clubs, for male and female athletes U17 and older.  The combined points total for male and females events determines the team positions.
There is a single "Division 1" but, beneath that, the Divisions 2, 3, and 4 are sub-divided on a regional basis, with 4 geographical areas at each level.  Liverpool Harriers compete in the Western section of the League.  In 2011, our team finished first overall in Division 3W, so gained promotion to Division 2W in 2012.
Our Team Managers in 2011 were Arwel Williams and Anne Croft.

National Junior League - this structure cover clubs from England, Scotland and Wales, at U20 and U17 level.  Up to 4 male and 4 female Second Claim members can compete in any match, providing their first claim club is not a member of the League. This has led to the formation of several "teams of convenience" purely targetting competition in this League.
There are three "Premier Divisions", of 8 teams each, covering North (including Scotland), Midlands (including Wales), and South.  At the end of each season, the best of the Premier teams compete in a single match to determine the "National Junior Champions".
Each area has feeder Divisions. In the North, one of these feeders is the Mersey Division in which Liverpool Harriers competed in 2011.  Our team won all 4 fixtures, to qualify for the Northern Promotion Final, where the we gained promotion to the Northern Premier Division for the 2012 season.
Our Team Manager is Clive Rigby, who has quite a task, given that a number of his team are not LHAC members and do not attend training sessions based at our Clubhouse. But he is an ex-member of Pembroke, so that probably helps!

National Young Athletes League - supplying age group competition for U13, U15, and U17 athletes of both sexes, with the combined points total determining the team positions.  The overall league is divided geographically.  Within the Northern section, the structure is topped by "Premier East" and "Premier West", and Liverpool Harriers currently competes in "Northern Premier West".
At the end of the league season, the top 4 teams from the East and West Premier Divisions compete in a Regional Play-Off.  From this, the top two teams go forward to the National YAL Main Final, possibly joined by the third-placed team, depending scores through the season for that team and those from other areas.  The next two Northern teams compete in the National YAL Auxiliary Final.
In 2011, we finished second in "Northern Premier West", then 4th in the Play-Off, and finally 5th in the Auxiliary Final.
A long season, and especially demanding for our Team Managers, who were Helen and Anne Croft, supported by Taff Williams and John Woodward.
