What a weekend!
After Katarina's win in the U20 Long Jump at Birmingham, in the England Indoors Championships, and Mat's National title at Parliament Hill Fields, there were several decent performances in the BUCS Indoors Championships at Sheffield - notably a great run from Harry Harper in the 1500m. (For all these, see News Items on right.)
But Day 2 at Birmingham was the highspot. First Kat scored a double, adding the High Jump title to her Long Jump crown, with a new PB (and Senior Club Record) of 1.85m. Coach Mike Holmes reckons her failures at 1.89m (which would have equalled the CBP) were marginal... just a matter of time!
Meanwhile, Alex Boyce was showing his class in the U20 400m, running the fastest semi-final time, then winning the final in 47.82secs, well clear of the rest. Another National Champion!
We may not have had a runner in the very fast U20 Men's 800m, but we did have George Bunner (AAA Junior 880yds Champion of 1950) given the honour of presenting the prizes.
Two other High Jumps had LHAC interest: Aylish MacKenzie cleared 1.64m for 5th in the U17 event (ahead of LPS' Amelia McLaughlin again!) and Michael Hartley was 7th in the U20, with 1.90m.
Then the focus was back on Kat, who was the fastest qualifier in the 60m Hurdles, beating Commonwealth Youth 100mH Champion Yasmin Miller. But the line-up for the final included 3 athletes with faster PBs than Kat. We have almost grown used to her producing something special when under pressure.. and she did it again, finishing 2nd to Yasmin, 8.45secs to 8.48secs - PBs for both. Two golds, one silver - not bad!
A long weekend.. but what a happy one! |
