Liverpool Harriers Christmas Handicap Race.

Sunday 23rd December 2001

Wavertree Mystery

On a chilly but dry Sunday afternoon, an above average number of members gathered for the annual handicap races. Some of the seniors were suffering from their night out last night.

It was nice to see that Curtis Robb was back running again after a journey from Sheffield. Although he was handicapped with 4.40mins alongside Ali O'Connor, it was Ali who was strongest on the day with Jon Ferguson 2nd, only 1 second ahead of Curtis.

The results of the winners were as follows:

Under 14 boys:                                 1st place             Daniel Stevens (10.01mins)

                                                               Fastest Lap       Craig Gunderson (8.59mins)

Ladies/Girls:                                      1st place              Laura Murphy (9.27mins)

                                                               Fastest Lap        Gill Taylor (8.50mins)

Senior Men/ Boys over 14:            1st place            Neil Chester(16.01mins)

                                                               Fastest Lap      Alistair O'Connor (14.10mins)

London Marathon 2002.

I wonder if you may be able to help me, I found your website through North of England AA Site, I couldn't believe the info. you have - very impressive!

As Northwest Co-ordinator for the Charity, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, I am currently looking for runners within my area - Cheshire, Merseyside, Lancs, Manchester and Staffs - who may be interested in running for us in the London Marathon.  Obviously the ballot results will be out soon and we are also offering Golden Bond places to serious runners.

I was wondering if it may be possible to promote this on your site, possibly with a link to our main charity site, or myself (based in St Helens).   Last year we had 32 runners, but only three from this area.  We offer quite an attractive package, although nothing that compares with the much larger charities, but we are trying hard and we do give a lot of support on the sponsorship side!

I attach a copy of a letter that I will be sending out to the Clubs in the area, which I think gives all the information you need.  Please also visit our website: www.Hearing-Dogs.co.uk   which will give you an idea of what we are about.

Many thanks for taking the time to read this and I look forward to hearing from you.

Another athlete resigns.

It was sad to hear at last week's committee meeting (20.09.01), the resignation of another athlete, who yet again has moved to Trafford A.C. for better competition? The athlete being Jenny Kemp (U23- Javelin International). This is the 6th athlete during the past few months.

Poaching in football is a serious offence, as alleged against Liverpool FC this week. Should something be done in athletics, before it spoils the sport. Down South to my knowledge it's being going on for some time.

As I have mentioned in my previous article, what happens when the money runs out?

I am also reliably informed that some senior members of Trafford A.C are not aware of what is going on?

I hope this is the last time I write on this issue.

Replies to below article

8.9.01 -    Comments were received from Mr. Damon Cripps (Liverpool Harriers - Sen' Men's - Hammer/Discus)  with regards to the article, but was disappointed in the fact that the athlete's were named. He did agree with me on the poaching element! He has asked that his letter be placed on the website - please follow link for letters.

In reply - Transfer of athlete's are a regular feature in Athletics Weekly.

Athlete's Resign

Over the past number of months several athlete's from the Harriers have resigned from the club to move to what they believe is greener pastures?

The sad thing is that many of the athlete's didn't even have the decency to discuss their reasons with their coaches or managers. Some just handed in letters of resignation via others.

One thing which does hit one in the face is the fact that it is well known that many athlete's have not only been pestered to move at meetings by the same person, which has been seen and heard, but also have received many telephone calls. Is it right? of course not, but the promise? of fee's etc shows how some people can be tempted. What happens when the money runs out? or the athlete's are not performing. What do they do or where do they go? personally I think they will be lost  from athletics. Any views please e-mail me on:

 www.ArwelWilliams@aol.com

The athlete's are:

Dianne Allahgreen - Sprints  to Trafford AC

David O'Leary - Hurdles to Trafford AC

Vicky Scott - Throws to Trafford AC

Peter Walsh - Middle Distance - to Trafford AC

Bryan Kelly - Throws to Trafford AC?

Ian Lowthian - Sprints to Sale Harriers

Danielle Halsall - Sprints to Sale Harriers

City of Liverpool Sporting Awards

Thursday 28th March 2001.

For the past 7 years the City of Liverpool has recognised the sporting achievements of its residents. Again this was a good year for the club, with the following awards being made :

Individual

Teams

However the awards night was not complete until the Stan Owen Trophy was awarded to a person who had dedicated his or her life to sport and made a significant contribution to the City. It went to Ernie Gallagher who joined the Harriers 58yrs ago and in 1950 turned to coaching after achieving Regional recognition as a member of the various Harriers medley relay teams.

Since 1985, he has been the Hon. Secretary of the Harriers, and the award is well justified to an excellent servant.

Note of thanks - (24.03.01)

Can I thank everyone who have been in touch, and for the cards after my brief spell in hospital, this week. It does make me feel much better. However the treatment is to continue.

Thanks.

Presentation Evening - Season 2000.

On the evening of Saturday 20th January 2001, athlete's, family and friends gathered at the Manweb Club, Thingwall Lane, Liverpool. The evening had been organised  by Vicci Scott and the catering was done by Margaret Cheetham assisted by Sue Smith.

Many athlete's were awarded various awards and the highlight of the evening was the announcement that Diane Allahgreen and Paul Brizzell had jointly won the athlete of the year award. The sub committee had been unable to separate the two athlete after their performances at the Olympic Games in Sydney.

Unfortunately Paul Brizzell was unable to attend, but Diane Allahgreen was present. Her coach Bob Birrell has provided a pen picture of Dianne for the club which will be obtained and linked to this page, when received.
