Wavertree Mystery

On a chilly but dry Sunday afternoon, an above average number of members gathered for the annual handicap races. Some of the seniors were suffering from their night out last night.

Under 14 boys:                                 1st place             Daniel Stevens (10.01mins)

                                                               Fastest Lap       Craig Gunderson (8.59mins)

McDonald's YA League Final.

Sunday 2nd September 2001.

Alexander Stadium, Birmingham

The boys traveled to Birmingham with high hopes of at least emulating last years performance when they took Enfield and Haringey to within 7pts. However it was not to be and after being runner's up for the last 8 years, the team finished in 3rd place. Enfield won ( 439pts), with Harrow in 2nd place(388.5pts), with the boys 1.5pts behind.

During most of the day the boys were in 2nd/3rd place and within 20pts of Enfield, however they were stronger on the sprints  and a few other events. We yet again were not perfect, U13 boys relay team were disqualified,  no height in Pole Vault (U17), and athlete's who were expected to perform did not. It is quite clear to see that U15 boys middle distance was very strong and will be a force to be reckoned with over the road and cross country this coming season.

However we did have winners,

U13 Boys

Liam McCully        800m(A)               2.24.06(pb)

U15 Boys

Danny Malone           800m (B)      2.06.58
John Mannion         1500m (A)      4.29.52
Paul McHugh             1500m (B)      4.34.35
Tom Michaelson      3000m (A)    9.31.17
David Marteau     3000m (B)          9.42.12(pb)
Joe Connor HT (B) 43.63m
Paul McKown JT (B) 38.46m

U17 Men
Ryan Armstrong 1500mS/C (A) 4.35.16
Peter Cranfied SP (A) 15.05

Northern Premier Division

Stanley Park, Blackpool -  Sunday 22nd July 2001.

On a warm day in Black pool, the boys team although weakened by many athlete's taking the first week of the school holidays, had a reasonable day and were the eventual winners by 127pts from Kingston upon Hull ( 172pts), with Southport and Waterloo 3rd (159pts) and Barnsley were 4th ( 129pts).

This means that the YA Boys have won the Northern Premier Division and will attend the National Final at Birmingham on 2nd September 2001.

Joe Connors won the Hammer (U15) event and was the Field Man of the Match with a throw of  46.69m from his team mate Mike Bomba (English School Champion) with a throw of 46.49m. It's pleasing to report on such quality athlete's. It was also nice to see Ian Standish win the 100m (u15) after his accident with a car, which he wrote off.

The lads have just under 6 weeks to get ready for the National Final, and hopefully do themselves justice at last.
