Anyika Onuora announces retirement from athletics

On Monday 25th November, Anyika Onuora announced her retirement from athletics at a press conference at Wavertree.

The statement from the press conference reads as follows:

Liverpool based and current 4x400m Relay Olympic Bronze Medallist, Anyika Onuora will hang up her spikes. 200m and 400m specialist, Onuora, who won 5 national titles in her 18 year long career, decided that it’s time to say goodbye to her active sports career. “I will say goodbye to the sport I love so much as I move onto the next chapter in my life” says 35 year old Onuora. In 2016 Onuora had to overcome her battle with Malaria, that she picked up visiting her family in Nigeria. “Against all odds I was able to come back after my illness and win a medal at the European Championships in 2018 with our 4x 400m relay team and an Olympic bronze medal in Rio. ” Onuora is full of plans to stay involved in athletics. “I’m making plans for the future right now, says Onuora, athletics is my life but I would like to play a role as a mentor to the next generation. I want to give back to the sport that has given me so much success and be an example for others to follow ”.
