It was a good first day in the London Anniversary Games for Katarina Johnson-Thompson setting a new outdoor PB of 1.95 in the High Jump.

Possibly her strongest discipline, Kat already holds the National Record with an indoor jump of 1.97 set in the British Indoor Championships in 2015, but her outdoor mark was set at 1.92 from Götzis earlier this year. Clearing 1.92 on her second attempt, she also cleared 1.95 with two goes before attempting to get the outright record with 3 attempts at 1.98, but that wasn’t to be on the night. The ease at which she sailed over the earlier attempts is a great confidence boost and an indicator of what’s still to come.

In the 400m, Anyika Onoura lined up alongside 3 other British athletes maybe with some disappointment to not be selected for Rio for the individual event as well as the relay and finished with a time of 52.34 a bit below her season’s best of 51.47 where she got the bronze medal in this year’s European Championships earlier this month.

On the second day, Kat competed in the long jump and finally got back to the level we know she can achieve by winning the event with a 4th round jump of 6.84 to Sharna Proctor’s 2nd place 6.80. A terrific couple of days’ jumping for her which sets her up very nicely for Rio.

In addition 3 of our club officials were officiating at the event, being our Club secretary, Taff Williams, Elaine Williams and Dean Williams who was one of the Field Referees.

Full results are available HERE, and we wish both Katarina and Anyika the very best of luck for the Olympics which starts on 5th August.
